Biography of the Founder
Mr. Wong Chu King
Sixty years ago, a man born in China migrated to the Philippines with high hopes to find a greener pasture. Life was not easy in the beginning when World War II broke he suffered greatly. Alone, he endured fears, hunger and pains. He witnessed the fall of Manila, horrible deaths of many Filipinos, and a number of families shattered.

Grateful to God for having saved his life, he pledged to lift the lives of his fellowmen by offering them an opportunity where they could mend broken pieces and start anew. His compassion towards the war victims gave him the courage to build a small factory and venture into cigarette business through the assistance of a few honest and trusted friends. Why cigarette? According to his testimony, the war deprived many Filipinos the luxury of eating three meals a day. To forget their hunger, the people would fight and smoke cigarette. The factory was not established overnight. The process entailed a great deal of sacrifice, problems, and roadblocks. Instead of becoming discouraged, he patiently pursued his goal. After purchasing the necessary materials, he himself blended the tobacco then worked as a salesman, deliveryman, collector, cashier while simultaneously doing the promotion of his products.

In the midst of his efforts, he felt a greater success would be inevitable if he could be blessed with a helpmate who would be by his side on carrying out his endeavors. As he met the Filipina he desired to spend the rest of his life with, he did his best to overcome his shyness just so he could win her. Together they braved the difficulties that came their way until the small factory grew big and became a company. It branched out into other businesses such as tobacco processing, rice milling, buy and sell of goods, insurance, and construction. Thousands were given jobs as a fulfillment of the pledge to reach to the needs of others. His kindness to his fellowmen was an extension of the love he lavishly rendered his wife and children, 3 boys and 3 girls. With his caring wife, he reared and taught his children good values such as humility and respect for every man, great or small. To this day, those children band in hand support and manage the family businesses.

Like his wife, he was religious and devout. They never claimed as theirs all that they had and enjoyed in life. They would bring the glory to God who caused everything to fall in place and made success a reality. Once a small factory, now known as La Campana Fabrica de Tabaccos, Inc., Likewise the entire company salutes to its founder, Mr. Wong Chu King.
